The threat of extinction of the orangutan in Borneo and Sumatra is becoming more real.
Maroochy Chamber of Commerce aims to raise awareness and understanding of the plight of the Orang-utan, the ‘people of the forest’.
The Orangutan Project Conservation Director, Leo Biddle will travel from Borneo’s orangutan habitat to share his experiences with the devastation occurring in the jungles whilst raising much needed awareness for this threatened species at a special SUNSHINE COAST ORANGUTAN FUNDRAISER DINNER on Thursday 24 October 5.30-8.30pm.
Of particular interest to Sunshine Coast Eco-Tourism operators, Not-for-Profits and Environmental groups, Leo will also share his very successful business model in relation to volunteerism and ecotourism and how his model can be applied locally. “The threat of extinction is becoming more imminent for these great apes and they need assistance now more than ever”, says Biddle.
For the orangutan, the biggest threat to its existence is deforestation. Deforestation in Borneo is responsible for approximately 17% of the global greenhouse gas emissions through burning and is a major contribution to climate change. Aceh in Sumatra is currently preparing to open over 1.2 million hectares of protected forest for the development of mines, plantations, roads, logging and palm oil expansion. This devastating plan would reduce total forest cover of Aceh from 68% to 45% and see the destruction of
Tripa and other areas of the protected Leuser Ecosystem driving Sumatran orangutans, elephants, tigers and rhinos to extinction.
Without their forests, the Orang-utans become easy prey to natural predators and hunters. Female Orang-utans are often hunted for their meat which is sold on the black market and their infants are stolen and sold for pets because they ‘look cute.’
Leo Biddle and the Maroochy Chamber of Commerce will host a fun filled and informative evening dinner on Thursday 24th October as one of 12 awareness and fundraising events being held Australia-wide this month to send this vital call for help. 100% of funds raised from the event will support The Orangutan Project whose mission is to promote the survival of the Sumatran and Bornean orangutan species in their natural habitat by undertaking genuine, measurable and effective orangutan conservation.
