THE TEWANTIN NEIGHBOURHOOD GROUP of the Australian Sewing Guild -- known as The Guilded *Lilies* Sewing Circle. *(Ladies industriously learning interesting exciting sewing). Will be meeting on Saturday 27th March 2010 commencing at 9.00 am until 3.00 pm at the Masonic Hall, cnr of Moorindil and Toolar Streets, Tewantin, Qld 4565.

Alison Wheeler, known as the Brisbane Sewing Lady, will be teaching how to fit commercial dressmaking patterns. She will talk about where good fit is needed; why it is important; and the implications on a whole garment if it is not achieved. She will demonstrate the tools needed to help the home dressmaker achieve a good fit, and participants will work on either altering a bust dart, or the crotch in pants. Below is the requirement list for this meeting:

Paper Shears,
3M Magic TapeTM (12mm wide) or Selco Invisible Tape,
Tape Measure,
Chinagraph pencil (available at newsagents),
6mm elastic to tie around your waist,
Clear dressmaker's ruler (approx 24" long by 3" to 6" wide)
Glas head pins on magnetic pincushion,
Notepad and Biro
Pattern you wish to fit cut out in single size

  • For jackets, blouses, dresses -- Take high bust/chest measurement (Buy pattern using this measurement as bust size unless you have a large frame, or if you fall between sizes, select the smaller pattern size)
  • For skirts and pants -- Take hip measurement and use this to purchase pattern (Generally, if you fall between sizes, select the smaller pattern or If you have a flat seat, select the larger size)

The Tewantin Group has a regular program with a different topic each month. For the prospective new members, the group is made up of enthusiastic people, with varying skills from the novice to the specialist. Members bring their sewing machines and lunch and in a friendly environment explore both basic dressmaking and decorative sewing techniques.
