THE inaugural Friends of MontroseAccess art auction will be held on Friday, 1 June at the Matthew Flinders Anglican College to raise much-needed funds for one of Queensland’s longest-established charities.

The cocktail exhibition will feature a selection of original pieces and prints from some of the Sunshine Coast’s most recognisable artists, students of Matthew Flinders and clients of MontroseAccess.

The charity provides essential services to 600 children and young adults with disabilities across Queensland, including 60 clients in the Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast regions.

The Friends of MontroseAccess group was established earlier this year by 15-year-old Matthew Flinders student Sophie McKenzie. This is the first volunteers group for MontroseAccess and will be used as a template for future support groups throughout Queensland.

The art auction is Sophie’s first initiative to raise funds for MontroseAccess, which provides respite and therapy to local disabled children and their families to help improve their quality of life.

The artwork will be on display and go under the hammer at a stylish evening of wine and canapés at Matthew Flinders Anglican College’s new performing arts centre.

“I hope that people get behind the auction and thereby behind the charity too; community support is vital for local families who live with disability every day,” Sophie said.

“The art auction is our first Friends event and we are very grateful to all of the local businesses who have supported us in putting this together.

Sophie said Brett Graham from Ray White had kindly donated his time as auctioneer on the night, Get Wines Direct will be supplying beverages and See Restaurant is catering the event.

She said Nina Shadforth, the regional gallery’s curator, will also be on hand as the official MC for the night.

“I encourage people to buy tickets quickly as we are expecting a large crowd,” Sophie said.

“The artwork is fantastic and I don’t expect it will last long.”

MontroseAccess CEO Darrel Bourke said Sophie’s effort in founding the Friends group and organising the inaugural Friends of MontroseAccess fundraising art auction at Matthew Finders Anglican College was impressive and humbling.

“We appreciate every volunteer who offers us their time and care, but Sophie is one in a million,” Mr Bourke said.

“We are a Queensland-based but very local charity, and this event will help on a regional level to raise awareness, drive support and help raise much-needed funds.”

Every year the charity needs to raise at least $1.4 million to cover the shortfall in government funding required to continue to provide essential services for its young clients and their families.

The Friends of MontroseAccess initiative has been established to raise local awareness and community support through regional chapters of “friends” who will host events and activities to strengthen community connections and raise public awareness of the work of MontroseAccess.

Tickets to attend are just $20 and doors will open at 6.30pm. To buy tickets or enquire about the Friends of MontroseAccess fundraising art auction at Matthew Flinders Anglican College on June 1, email Kelly on
