Using traditional skills such as basketry, weaving and papermaking, the two artists present a selection of beautifully crafted objects loosely based on the notion of the container, and invite the viewer to contemplate the meaning to be found in enclosed spaces.

Judy Barrass is well known as a paper and book artist, but she has also used weaving and basketry skills from her background in textiles.  The inner space of the container holds the key to an understanding of her work in this exhibition . Tiny, fragile white wire baskets become 'Containers for the Emotions', some open and expansive, some deep, some choked off.  See-through books enclosed in perspex entice the viewer to look beyond the surface similarities to discover differences within.

Jill Brose has a background in both sculpture and weaving. Her woven, twined, and constructed containers in this exhibition combine natural fibres with man-made materials such as wire and metal, creating an interesting juxtaposition that speaks of the entanglements to be found in the world around us. The inner space is sometimes viewed through a web-like structure or not seen at all, leaving the viewer to guess at the mystery within. Her exquisite tiny boxes bring to mind the cavernous quiet spaces inside empty churches, houses and clocktowers.

The artists share a love of form and a preference for organic shapes and natural materials.  Both are highly regarded and 'The Inner Space' offers a unique opportunity to see them working together.

The work in this exhibition is much more than just charming and beautifully crafted objects presented for admiration. It asks the viewer to participate in the questioning of the nature of containers and containers.
