The Lady

Director: Luc Besson
Cast: David Thewlis, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathon Woodhouse

The Lady is the extraordinary story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband Michael Aris.

It is also  the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma's Democracy Movement.

In 1947, when Aung San Suui Kyi is two years old, her father Aung San leads Burma to independence.  But soon afterwards, along with members of his political party, is murdered by a military death squad.  Forty one years later Suu Kyi, who has been living in England with her academic husband Michael and their two sons, returns to Burma to visit her sick mother.  She witnesses the brutality with which soldiers, acting on orders from the military junta, crush political dissent, and she agrees to lead the National League for Democracy.  Her party clearly wins the 1990 elections but the Burmese military refuse to accept the result of the election and move to bring Suu Kyi under control, resulting in her being separated from her family and put under house arrest.
