One day a Japanese Ceremonial Sword fell from the wall of Gilbert’s study and gave him, he said later, a broad idea…that broad idea turned out to be one of the most loved Gilbert & Sullivan musicals of all time. In a letter to Sullivan, Gilbert suggested that a Japanese musical could afford for picturesque scenery and costumes and for unusual music, and that nothing of the kind had ever been attempted in England before. The next day Sullivan began work on “The Mikado”…The Mikado ran for 672 performances in its initial season and was by far, and still is, the most popular of all the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire…
With a cast of just 6, the Gilbert & Sullivan Company of Australia are back for 2012 with their brand new show. Following the outstanding success of their hysterical production and world first HMS PINAFORE, the gang are returning with a fantastic new treatment of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan of all time, THE MIKADO.
This new version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s classic performed in full costume, will again contain many more musical delights as well as comedy scenes that will have audiences in gales of laughter.
How can it be done? We hear you cry…
Starring in this production is the very funny and highly acclaimed actor Brian Hannan. Best remembered for his 9 years on ABC TV BellBird and many JC Williamson musicals, Brian wowed audiences with his hysterical portrayal of Sir Joseph Porter in HMS Pinafore. This year he will play the comic leading role of KoKo.
The Melbourne Age best summed up Brian’s performance by saying, “Brian Hannan has to be the man of 1,000 voices and he delivered an outstanding performance...in Hannan the company have a comic genius…”
Alison Rae Jones an exciting soprano from Opera Australia will play the role of Yum Yum with her voice described by the Herald/Sun in Melbourne as “Soaring and Powerful”. Alison brings a wealth of professional experience to the company having sung in Europe and the UK over the past 15 years, including the role of Yum Yum for the D’oyly Carte Opera Company in the world famous Savoy Theatre, London.
Seasoned professional Philip Wheeldon will play the roles of Pooh Bah and The Mikado. Philip brings a wealth of acting experience to the company. He is also responsible for many of the additional lyrics in the show. Australian Opera performer, Caroline Vercoe, brings to life the wonderful role of Katisha. Linda O’Brien will play the role of the Musical Director at The Piano. The production is directed by the critically acclaimed Hugh Halliday.
All in all this will truly be one of the cleverest and entertaining productions to tour in 2012, and why wouldn’t it be with songs like, Three Little Maids From School, The Sun Whose Rays, Here’s A Howdy Do, Tit Willow and many more.
So fasten your rickshaws, The Pinafore crew are sailing to Japan for more madness and hilarity, and truly one of the best times in the theatre anywhere.
Don’t miss the most popular of all, The Mikado…you’ll love it. However don’t just take our word for it….The Melbourne AGE said… “Raw energy propelled this cast to brilliance…the capacity audience loved it”.
