Inaugural awards night set to recognise local immigrants

The Sunshine Coast Community Cooperative, together with five third year University of the Sunshine Coast public relations students have come together to organise an awards night which recognises the outstanding contribution made by migrants to the Sunshine Coast community.

The Multicultural Excellence Awards have been developed to recognise the valuable role that migrants have played in helping shape the Sunshine Coast into the diverse and vibrant region that it is today.

Mark Wischant, a member of the Sunshine Coast Community Cooperative said over 16,400 people or 18.1% of the Sunshine Coast population were born overseas, that equates to one in every six people born overseas.  An even more interesting fact is that one in every 17 people who live on the Sunshine Coast was born in a Non English Speaking Country.

"That's an incredibly high number when you consider that 22% of the Australian population was born overseas so it is clear that we are quite a diverse community here on the Sunshine Coast and many of these migrants have made a valuable contribution to our way of life," he said.

The Multi Cultural Excellence Awards will recognise migrants who have excelled in the areas of Business, Sport, Academia, Arts/Culture, Community, Health/Medical and there is also a youth category.

"There are a whole host of local people who were born overseas and who have excelled in these areas and we encourage them or their family or friends to nominate them for an award," Mark said.

The Multicultural Excellence Awards ceremony will be held on Saturday October 30 at Coastline BMW Currimundi.  The cocktail style event includes live music, food from Semos Moroccan Cuisine and wines by Purple Pallet. Tickets are just $35 and can be purchased via email at or call 0403 727 107.

Nominations close on October 15 and forms are available from or at IGA Express (Buderim), Gloria Jeans (Mooloolaba) and Pizza Capers (Maroochydore).
