THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
A true classic of modern theatre, this sparkling comedy has recently been revived on the London stage at The Old Vic by Artistic Director, the illustrious Kevin Spacey. The hugely successful revival, acclaimed by critics, commenced in May and concludes in September. Quite coincidentally it is having its Sunshine Coast premiere (that's right it's never been performed here) at The Independent Theatre at Eumundi, commencing Friday, October 7th.
The Philadelphia Story was written by Philip Barry for Katherine Hepburn and it opened in New York in 1939, a smash-hit from day one. After running for a year and then touring it became a smash-hit all over again as an MGM movie which starred Kate, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant and Ruth Hussey. It wasn't till the 50s that MGM dusted off the Philip Barry Script handed it to Cole Porter and asked him to put a score to it. It then cast Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Celeste Holme and Louis Armstrong and the All Stars and re-named it High Society. The film was then turned into a stage production in the 90s taking it full circle.
The Sunshine Coast production is directed by David Berker (Les Mis, My Fair Lady, Nancy, Hart, Chorus Line, Educating Rita) and has a top line cast, Linda Morgan, Jenny Bundy, Luke Lanham, Eddie Ellis, Philip Chappell, Frank Wilkie, Lindley Moon, Kane Searson, Zoe Theodore and Denise Corbin.
A strong indication of Philip Barry's witty and incisive writing is, that when The Philadelphia Story was made into a film, MGM saw no reason to change the dialogue. Later when it became High Society the same applied.
This is a play that stands the test of time and The Indee season is set to sparkle.
