Access Gallery: The Red Tent, a collection of oil paintings by local artist Jane Powell
Dates: February 24 to March 15
Opening: Saturday February 25, 2pm
To celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th, 2006 and the feminine struggle for equality, justice and peace, Noosa Regional Gallery is showing a collection of oil paintings of the female form by local artist Jane Powell, based on the book The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.
"These paintings started out as an exploration of colour, but while painting I was also reading Anita Diamant's book The Red Tent, and so my paintings were influenced by this wonderful story.
I have enjoyed making art all my life, with some commercial success. Many Noosa households have a 'pet portrait' by me hanging somewhere! When the University of the Sunshine Coast was opened I enrolled to attain a Bachelor of Arts with an Art and Design major. My artistic strength is in drawing but an inherited box of oil paints led me to try this gorgeous medium and so develop the current collection, 'Women of the Red Tent'.
The female characters in the book, 'The Red Tent' speak across the centuries with ancient wisdom which resonates even now in this sad time of oppression, globalised terrorism, war and political struggles. If only feminine wisdom was listened to, but so often it is drowned out by overwhelming masculine dialogue!"
