Title: The Tree
Rating: (M) 1hr 45m
Details: Director: Julie Berticelli
Cast: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Aden Young, Morton Csokas, Morgana Davies, Christian Byers
An Australian/French co-production, The Tree was the closing night film in Cannes this year, receiving a seven minute standing ovation - and stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as Dawn, a newly widowed mother of four children. Dawn deals badly with the death of her husband Peter, but eight year old Simone has decided to be happy, particularly as she believes that her dead father speaks to her through the Moreton Bay fig which grows beside their ramshackle house.
When Dawn pulls herself together and gets a job in the office of a local plumber - and begins a relationship with him, Simone disapproves, and so it seems does Peter.
The Tree is as much about love as it is about loss and says something meaningful about the state of grief - living with it and moving through it - while the Moreton Bay fig itself is a character, offering something esoteric.
It is a film about loss, yet it is realistic and hopeful, a little mystical and really quite beautiful.
