THE VIEW FROM MADELEINE'S COUCH
Sunday 19th September
With a name like that, could you expect to hear hot, fiery pulsating rhythms of Brazil.? The background story to this remarkable group is quite incredible. TVFMC was formed in 1988 initially born out of a love for Brazilian music and bossa nova. [Who can argue with that?} Kym [the vibraphone and marimba genius]listened to this music from his parents and later when he and Anje met a love affair for Brazil started . The story of the name has been well written about so we will leave it to Anje to retell during the performance
The first few years of the band's life the music was mainly based around bossa nova and samba while Kym was adapting techniques on the vibes to suit this very guitar- centered music written by Jobim,Bonfa,Gilberto and Baden Powell In 2204 Kym and Anje lived in Brazil for several months to study.
During this trip Anje began serious percussion lesson on traditional Brazilian instruments like the pandeiro and the surdo a big bass-like drum used in sambas. In 2008 the band was invited to perform in Rio's hottest live music venue,Triboz.Anje applied for a grant from Arts Queensland and were able to take their drummer and bassist with them for study. This stay provided the background for the second CD . Rehearsal for a week in the studio and "Casa da Boa Vida" was released to rave reviews. The song "Bom Fazer [its good to do] won the QSong world music award in 2009. The band continues to play old favourites and includes originals with many flavours of jazz, funk soul and the great sounds of Brazil. TVFMC is a band to dance the salsa mambo bossa nova or just listen and get captivated by the fascinating Rio rhythms. With Kym playing vibes ,marimbas Anje vocals drums, James guitar OJ bass and Nik on percussion and drums we can be assured of an afternoon of scintillating rhythms and music
