Times of Change: A History of Caloundra City will be launched on Monday 14 May at 2.50pm at the Caloundra City Heritage Forum, The Events Centre (Minchinton St) and will feature a presentation by author Gary McKay.
Caloundra City history preserved in print
The colourful and at times provocative history of Caloundra City has been captured in a new publication that will be released at the City's first ever heritage forum.
Times of Change: A History of Caloundra City takes readers on an unforgettable journey from pre-European settlement to present day, tracking families, people, industries and places and charting the growth of our communities from fledgling towns into the bustling regional city we know today.
Acclaimed Australian author Gary McKay - who has extensive experience working with oral histories - penned the book with the help of the Caloundra City Libraries and a community-based reference committee comprising of representatives from local historical groups and individuals with extensive knowledge about our City's heritage.
Caloundra City Acting Mayor Don Smith said the book not only provides a comprehensive and accurate history but presents it in an extremely readable and accessible format.
"The committee helped the author to establish the principal events and themes that characterised the development of the region, which supplemented historical records from Council's own Local History collection," Cr Smith said.
Cr Smith said the book is designed to appeal to a wide range of readers, including local residents, visitors and students, taking readers on an entertaining trip back to earlier times and enlightening them about the evolution of the City's many landscapes and communities.
Chapters cover the area's first Aboriginal inhabitants, the European explorers of the 1700s and 1800s, the pioneers, and the early settlers and guide us through federation, world wars, The Great Depression, the formation of the Sunshine Coast and the more recent decades of development.
The publication boasts more than 200 black-and-white images sourced from the Caloundra City Libraries Local History collection, local residents and the State Library of Queensland.
Times of Change: A History of Caloundra City will be available for purchase from May 14 from the Caloundra City Libraries, Council's Customer Service Centre, the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery (1 Omrah Avenue, Caloundra), Visitor Information Centres and selected bookstores.
The paperback version of the book will retail for $29.95 with a limited number of special edition hard covers available for $39.95.
