Toastmasters' Charter Lunch celebrates 'new beginnings' for the University of the Sunshine Coast A Toastmasters' Charter celebration was held on Saturday, 23rd July at the University Club to commemorate the formation of the USC Toastmasters Club. In true University style, a family barbecue lunch with the theme of 'New Beginnings' signified the inaugural Club's celebrations. Our federal representative, the Honourable Peter Slipper MP, kindly accepted an invitation to attend and presented the club with an Australian flag that will be displayed at all official club meetings. This enthusiastic group of students and friends is now recognised as a fully chartered club by Toastmasters International, a leading world organisation dedicated to teaching leadership and effective communication skills. President of the newly formed club, Tim Weir, says "Toastmasters empowers students to achieve their full potential by improving their communication and leadership skills; invaluable skills in all aspects of business and personal life. It is an asset to have on your Curriculum Vitae when applying for jobs. In fact, a recent survey of employers indicated that good communication skills were the leading skills employers were looking for in job applicants". The University of the Sunshine Coast Toastmasters Club is eager to attract new members, and welcomes all students and members of the community. As well as bi-monthly meetings the club will be offering regular Speechcraft courses each year, which are short workshops designed to introduce members to impromptu speaking, prepared speeches, listening and evaluation skills. Most importantly the club emphasises personal development through fun and friendship. Meetings will be held every 2nd and 4th Monday from 9.30 am - 12 noon in DM3 (Demountable buildings next to the Faculty of Arts & Sciences building). For further details please contact Tim Weir (07) 54301226 or John Kay (07) 54932406.
