The new Noosa Regional Gallery Travelling Scholarship, totalling to $13,500, will give Sunshine Coast artists and designers - including students - a rare opportunity to travel and study for their career development.
The scholarship, awarded annually, has been branched into three categories: Open ($10,000), Tertiary ($2,500) and Secondary ($1,000). Applicants can be students, or at an emerging or professional level of their career. Work may be of any visual art or visual design practice. However, inspiration must be drawn, or materials used, from the natural environment.
The scholarship has a global focus, ready to assist with attendance at international and interstate conferences, workshops and master-classes; international and national internships; international research projects; and participation in international and interstate residencies.
A Travelling Scholarship exhibition will be held at the Noosa Regional Gallery, showcasing the work by 40 artists and designers short-listed for the scholarship. An assessment panel of three highly qualified art and design industry professionals will select the work.
Applications close on 4 May 2007, and the winners of the three categories will be announced at the exhibition opening on 13 July 2007.
Director of the Noosa Regional Gallery, Christine Ballinger, says "The Noosa Regional Gallery Travelling Scholarship is an excellent opportunity to support our artists and designers and, ultimately, to foster the creative spirit of our region."
Ballinger explains, "This substantial scholarship is unique in Queensland in that it focuses on supporting regional artists and designers attain professional development through international study and builds on the strengths of the Sunshine Coast namely the beauty of our natural environment."
Ballinger adds, "The Sunshine Coast has a widespread reputation for embracing the importance and beauty of our natural environment. We are also known for being highly creative community. This scholarship combines the two, confirming our commitment to these aspects of ourselves."
The travelling scholarship owes the impressive $10,000 open award to its major sponsor Petrac. "We are delighted to be a financial contributor to this program," John Grocock, CEO, Noosa North Shore Resort (a Petrac development) says, "as it ensures that local upcoming artists and designers have a platform to display their talents and creative abilities, enabling them to generate further opportunities for success."
The Scholarship will be administered by the Noosa Regional Gallery and is generously supported by Petrac, Wide Bay Australia Ltd, Unique Impressions and The Noosa Journal.
