Maroochy's Most Wanted
Maroochy Shire's most wanted list is about to get a whole lot shorter with Dutchman's Pipe and Asparagus Fern on the hit list during Weedbusters week commencing October 8th.
Maroochy Shire Council's Community Conservation Team will be handing over three healthy, bushland-friendly plants to everyone who brings in a shopping bag full of weeds to one of the designated swap centres across the shire (maximum of five trees per person).
"The aim is to target the weeds in everyone's backyards as our natural areas are under continual threat of invasion from weeds" Maroochy Mayor Joe Natoli said.
"Council is keen to see the Trees for Weeds conservation initiatives grow, as it promotes the use of native plants in local gardens for local wildlife," he said.
"It would be great if, as a shire, we could completely fill a large industrial skip by the end of Weedbusters week."
"Three terrific native plants for every bag of weeds, I think that's a fair swap," Councillor Natoli said.
Weeds on the 'most wanted' list include the Singapore Daisy, Impatiens, Dutchman's Pipe Vine, Asparagus Fern and Mickey Mouse Plant.
Copies of 'Our Locals are Beauties' will also be distributed listing some of the Shire's other worst offenders.
Community Conservation Officers will be available at both 'Trees for Weeds' days for the community to discuss their backyard weeds.
The 'Trees for Weeds' locations are:
The Old Post Office, Buderim on Thursday, October 11 between 9:00 am and 10:30 am.
Coolum Library on Friday October 12 between 9:00 am and 10.30am.
