Under Milk Wood is a 1954 radio drama by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, commissioned by the BBC and later adapted for the stage.
An omniscient narrator invites the audience to listen to the dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of the fictional small Welsh fishing village Llareggub ("bugger all" backwards).
They include Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard, relentlessly nagging her two dead husbands; Captain Cat, reliving his seafaring times; the two Mrs. Dai Breads; Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music; and Polly Garter, pining for her dead lover. Later, the town awakens and, aware now of how their feelings affect whatever they do, we watch them go about their daily business.
Large cast required, especially males, ages 17 and over
This much loved radio play will be performed without Welsh accents, but will require all actors to take multiple roles, using physical and vocal character traits to differentiate them. All actors will be on stage for the duration of the play.
Please be prepared to sing a verse of Danny Boy at the audition! There is a little singing required for some characters, but it is of the simple "folk song" style, hence the selection of Danny Boy for audition purposes.
As there are 64 characters in the play, this will be an open audition, with many people reading at once. Roles will be allocated at the discretion of the director, due to the doubling up requirements.
