The University of the Sunshine Coast will present a free screening of the award-winning environmental documentary ‘Trashed’ on Friday 25 October.
The public can join USC students and academics in watching the documentary by British filmmaker-journalist Candida Brady which screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
‘Trashed’ follows Academy Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons on a tour to discover the extent of the global waste problem. As he travels to beautiful destinations tainted by pollution, his narration outlines pressing issues surrounding waste and sustainability.
The Australian rights to the movie are owned by Take 3, a not-for-profit group focused on reducing marine debris and encouraging every beach visitor to take three pieces of rubbish away with them.
USC Academic Fellow Phyllis Araneo, who teaches the core course Environment, Technology and Sustainability, said the movie matched the University’s focus on sustainability issues and regional engagement.
“I’ve organised this event with my colleagues and members of Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Sunshine Coast Council and Goodliving Food Co-op,” she said.
“We want to promote awareness and a call for action concerning the amount of trash we as a developed society generate, where it winds up, and what we can do about it.
“There will be networking at 5pm, including information on how to reduce our ecological footprint on the Sunshine Coast, and the movie will screen at 6pm.”
The event on Friday 25 October at USC’s Sippy Downs campus (Lecture Theatre 7, Building C) will end with a question and answer session.
