David Gibson, MP will open the first Sustainable Schools Symposium in the Mary Valley this Friday September 13 from 10.00am-2.15pm. It is a “Kids Teaching Kids” event in which students run presentations and participate in partner facilitated workshops. The focus is on what our schools and our communities are doing to make their environments more sustainable and contribute to future food security.

There is a comprehensive list of presenters delivering workshops to students throughout the day. From bush tucker tastings, butterfly gardens, endangered species to recycled musical art and hands on planting. The day has something for everyone, with the adult program offering two strands and a variety of displays in the Neil Mahoney Building at Mary Valley State College, Imbil. The café will offer lunch from the school garden with tea, coffee and damper available.

Strand 1:
11.35am - 12.15pm - Ian Mackay Weaving with Cat's Claw, Making useful items will removing invasive vegetation
12.15pm - 12.45pm - Gympie and District landcare President Ernie Rider: Good and Bad vines, knowing the difference
12.45pm - 1.30pm - Councillor Julie Walker & Mick Curran Gympie Regional Council Sustainability Initiatives
1.30pm - 2pm - Elli Webb, Transpacific Cleanaway Reducing Your Waste

12.15pm - 12.45pm - Glenda Pickersgill (Mary Valley Renewal) Riparian Restoration: Erosion Control with Native Vegatation

Tingid bugs used to control Cats Claw are now available for release to landholders wanting to help control this invasive weed. You can order bugs for $10 on 5488 5333 and collect them on the day.

Kids teaching kids is a program offered to schools to encourage environmental learning This event is also supported by Barambah Environmental Education Centre.
