Viva Italia!...Tenor flies from Rome for Italian Week celebrations on the Coast!
Rome-based, Sicilian-born tenor, Antonio Nicolosi will star in several OPERATIF! events during Italian week in May. OPERATIF! directors heard the wonderful singer when holidaying in Rome last year and invited him to realise his dream of coming to Australia to sing.
Nicolosi will be heard in three different concerts on the Coast, along with a fabulous line-up from OPERATIF!, including soprano Jennifer Parish, baritone Stewart Cameron, mezzo soprano Hayley Sugars and pianist John Woods.
Antonio is keen to establish an Opera career in Australia and will audition for the opera companies while he is here. He currently studies with some of Italy's greats, including the famous tenor Nicola Martinucci, who describes his voice as perfect for the great dramatic tenor roles.
"Often, in the evening, Antonio goes to the square in front of the Pantheon in Rome, to do some practice in a big space," Jennifer explained, "and it was here that we first heard him."
With a small CD player of orchestral accompaniments, Antonio sings famous aria after famous aria, with, according to Stewart, stamina that is rare indeed. "We were drawn to the square from afar by what we thought was a loud recording playing in a restaurant...or some sort of Festival. As we entered the square however and saw the cheering crowd circled about Antonio...we realised this was not a recording of Pavarotti loudly playing.....but a real singer with a brilliant and powerful voice!!" Jennifer added.
Antonio was fascinated to learn that Jennifer and Stewart have their own company in Australia and that for over 15 years, they have regularly performed opera and song to ever increasing audiences. When he said, "Some day...I want to come to Australia!"...the pair decided to invite him and set up some opera auditions for him here."
"Antonio is so excited and the concerts we are presenting will be marvellous," Stewart said. The Italian Week Festival has embraced them as part of their official schedule of events in May and OPERATIF! anticipate some exciting performances as local and visiting Italians join their regular Aussie audiences. Antonio will sing the well-known opera greats as well as favourite Italian Songs including O Sole Mio, Non ti scordar di me and Time to Say Goodbye.
You can hear Antonio at OPERATIF!'s always reasonable prices at 2.30pm on Sunday 15th May at The Events Centre, Caloundra, outdoors at 3pm on Sunday 22nd May in the stunning ancient theatre replica on the shores of Lake Macdonald, near Noosa or at 7pm on Friday 27th May in a fun dinner-show format at Maleny with hearty Italian fare by Pomodoras.
"We have a variety of dates and formats for the Coast so we encourage people to make their choice and book as soon as possible to be sure of tickets," said Jennifer.
