24 January 2006  Youth literature festival celebrates 10 years of success

The youth literature festival 'Voices on the Coast' has had two reasons to celebrate since the New Year commenced less than three weeks ago.

The first is the festival's 10th anniversary, having brought some of Australia's finest established and emerging writers and performers for young people to the area.

The second is a cheque for $10,000 handed over by Maroochy Mayor Joe Natoli from his Discretionary Donation Fund last week to support the 2006 festival, running from 29 May to 3 June.

"Voices on the Coast offers a unique cultural experience to many young people and the festival has become a much anticipated event by students from across the entire region," Cr Natoli said.

"I am thrilled to be able to support this event and I'm sure the 2006 festival will inspire thousands more children to enjoy reading, writing and performing, and developing their skills in the areas of the arts."

More than 100 individual presenters and 15 groups have participated since the festival's inception with half of them Queensland born or based.

These have included prestigious names such as Adeline Yen Mah, John Marsden and Jackie French. Quality local presenters also include Garry Crew, Karen Brooks, Jill Morris and Deborah Carlyon.

"It began back in 1996 as a one day event featuring author talks and now has grown to a point that it's offering two complete days of book talks, workshops, illustrating, poetry and performance," Cr Natoli said.

"An event such as Voices on the Coast is enormously important in an age of declining literacy and makes a real impact on the students who attend."
