More than 3,000 people are homeless on the Sunshine Coast which is traditionally double the average in Queensland.

A large group of supporters are expected to take part in the second annual Walk for the Homeless campaign to raise money and awareness to help the homeless.

Among the group will be Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay who will also finish the walk by spending Saturday night in swags and blankets in the Nambour Council Building forecourt, after a tinned baked bean dinner.

Councillor McKay said the inaugural walk last year was highly successful, with over 100 supporters taking part.

“What a wonderful initiative to support and raise awareness of the struggle faced by homeless people,” she said.

“There is so much we can do to help reduce the number of homeless people on our streets.

“Showing our support for this campaign, which is helping to highlight this issue and bring it to the forefront in the community, is one simple and effective way.

“The money raised from the walk’s $15 registration fee will go towards the Shack Community Centre in Nambour which provides food and emergency accommodation for the homeless.”

To highlight the plight of local homeless, participants in Saturday’s Walk for the Homeless will walk 20km from Nambour to Palmwoods and back followed by the sleepout.

“I encourage the community to take a walk in the shoes of a homeless person to understand the journey they take every day and night,” Cr McKay said.

“Join me – and all the terrific people who want to support The Shack – for the walk and sleepout on Saturday.

“We want as many people as possible to take part or donate to help support community efforts to reduce the number of homeless in Nambour.”
The walk starts from 9am on Saturday from The Shack in Price Street. Registration is at 8.30am.
