Exhibition: 'Wild Fear'
Artist: Heather Winter
Exhibition Opens: Saturday 3rd April 2pm
Exhibiton Dates : 2nd April - 25th April 2004
Returning from her successful residency and exhibition in Vienna, Heather Winter exhibits work from her ongoing 'Wild Fear' series. Heather examines terror and the abyss by swimming with sharks in a powerful performance piece.
"The Wild Fear series examines fear through zoomorphic experiences that I set up for the camera. It records a journey of traversing different inner and outer landscapes and terrain. From New Zealand, Thailand, the Kimberley to the alpine regions of Austria to Vienna, to the war torn areas of Belgrade and Nova Sad. The geographical movements map the trajectory of emotions, moving through moments of fear, psychological exile culminating in liberation. It documents a journey of finding strength and clarity in ones own country, in ones own skin. It is about finding the country within, a country I never loved but never left.
Through performance I reflect on the behaviour of animals and nature. I look for the archetypes of human behavior and find parallels in the natural world; an elephant never forgets, a snake transforms itself through the shedding of its skin. When sex becomes stale does it need a bolt of thunder?"
Fearful thoughts become embedded in our memories, we cannot forget. Fears manifest in the body. The body speaks louder than words.
To imagine that you are an animal you can begin to experience your life from a different perspective. The natural world can allow us to experience transformative powers, which lie beyond Western rationalism and unite us with its spiritual essence.
