Work for Queensland expos to deliver jobs, jobs, jobs

A series of Job Expos will be rolled out across Queensland in October as part of the State Government's Work for Queensland initiative, Premier Anna Bligh announced today (25 August 2011).

The Premier said the expos, a result of the Work for Queensland summit with the mining industry last week, would be held in Cairns, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, the Whitsundays and Wide-Bay Burnett.

"Queensland's economy is on the verge of the next big leap forward," Ms Bligh said.

"Our gas and resources are more sought after than ever before.

"We have the right stuff, in the right place, at the right time and our State is ready to seize this moment.

The Premier said as many as 38,000 construction and operation jobs will be created in the resource industry between now and 2015.

"I want to see as many Queenslanders as possible filling these positions.

"I want every Queenslander to have the chance to gain from this boom.

"These expos will help job seekers in these high unemployment areas plug into the mining boom."

The Premier said career advice, skills assessment and jobs would be on offer at the expos.

"We estimate there are up to 3,500 vacancies right now in the resource industry and we intend to make sure that as many Queenslanders as possible can take them up."

The State Government has been working with local councils on arrangements for the program.

Expos will be held in the following locations:
• Cairns - Monday 17 October at the Cairns Civic Centre
• Gold Coast - Wednesday 19 October with the venue being finalised now
• Sunshine Coast - Friday 21 October at the Caloundra Events Centre
• Whitsundays - Tuesday 25 October at the PCYC Airlie Beach, and
• Fraser Coast - Friday 28 October at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough

"If you are interested in a career in our booming resources sector mark those dates in your diary now and please come along to one of the Expos," the Premier said.
