Safety advocate Bill Martin draws on personal tragedy to lead Y Comply safety event
Having lost his 17 year old son Tim after he received an electric shock, Bill Martin now visits Queensland Businesses and will speak at a Y Comply safety event tomorrow afternoon (06 November 2015).
Mr Martin shares his tragic story to inspire people to show leadership in creating safety focussed cultures at work and help them better understand the unique safety requirements of young workers.
"My passion for safety is very strong," he said.
"I feel like I’ve got a responsibility to try and prevent others having to go through what we went through."
In support of Safe Work Month, TAFE Queensland East Coast and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland are holding the free information session featuring Mr Martin's experiences and providing education and advice on workplace health and safety for the public and businesses.
A major focus at the event is the importance of providing young workers with safe and healthy workplaces as they represent the future of the workforce.
“Safety is everyone’s business,” TAFE Queensland East Coast’s Workplace Health and Safety Manager Petrina Hilton said.
“We all have a duty of care and this event will provide a lot of support for industry and workers to ensure they understand their mutual responsibilities and rights under the appropriate state legislation.”
As an enthusiastic supporter of Safe Work Month, Ms Hilton said Safe Work Month's focus on moments in life provide strong motivation to stay safe at work and is a message TAFE Queensland East Coast completely supports.
“It could be time with your mates or the family you love or just doing something for you which we can draw on to keep safe at work,” she said.
The event includes free information sessions from industry specialists available for consultation and free practical resources to help businesses and organisations comply with the Workplace Health and Safety Act (2011).
