Wednesday 12 October is National Ride to Work Day and Youi Insurance,
together with the Sunshine Coast Council will be doing its part to help
reduce traffic and parking congestion around its head office on Lake
Kawana Boulevard, Birtinya.
For the past 5 years, Ride to Work Day has encouraged Australians to leave their car at home and hop on their bikes to travel to work.
Now in its sixth year, 150,000 participants across Australia are expected to take part in National Ride to Work Day, two of them being Youi’s own employees, Rodney Hayman and Scott Beaumont.
Scott has been riding to work since starting work with Youi in January and said it’s an important part of his fitness regime and also helps to save on fuel costs.
‘I ride from Caloundra every day, unless there is torrential rain in the morning. I enjoy riding for general fitness and also because it‟s fun. I generally ride my mountain bike through the bush or even just take short trips just to get outside‟ he said.
This Wednesday Scott and Rodney will be putting on their helmets and leading two riding groups from either Kawana or Caloundra so Youi employees can cycle into the office together. This initiative was organised by Youi’s Senior HR Advisor, Nadia Grace who said it’s the perfect time to start being active and getting outside in the lovely spring weather.
“Establishing a workplace that encourages a healthy way of life has always been important to us at Youi. When we relocated to our beautiful new premises at The Edge on Lake Kawana, we identified that the lake provided a wonderfully unique opportunity to allow us to do this. We purchased 10 bikes which can staff can utilise whilst they are at work. The bikes allow staff who don‟t ride to work the chance to cycle around the lake or to local shops and cafes during their breaks whilst hopefully also encouraging them to ride their own bikes to work,” Ms Grace said.
Rodney Hayman has been riding to work from his Mountain Creek home for the past couple of months and said that for him, riding to work was also a great social outing.
“I ride to work with four other colleagues who also live in the Mountain Creek area. Riding in a group is a lot of fun; we all motivate each other and always have a laugh along the way. The added physical benefit that bike riding provides is just a bonus for us,” he said.
Youi has been working closely with Sunshine Coast Council’s TravelSmart Destinations team to develop an active transport plan for all Youi employees, inclusive of public transport, car pooling 2 and employees to also consider other viable commuting alternatives to car travel. This will be the third TravelSmart event Youi has conducted since August 2011.
If employees want to participate and don’t own a bike they can still walk, skate, roller blade or use one of the Youi owned bikes. The intention behind the event is for Youi staff to experience how easy it is to cycle to work, especially with all the great cycling areas around Kawana and to get into a habit of cycling at least once a week.
Anyone living too far away from work can still park at a location approximately 3-5 km away and walk or cycle into Youi’s office in an attempt to reduce the parking congestion around the building. All participating Youi employees also go into a draw to win great prizes.
