Wednesday 5 April 2006 Young local artists launch book art exhibition
An exhibition by twelve local young artists including a two-metre outdoor 'book spire' will be launched during Youth Week on Friday April 7 at 10.30am at Caloundra City Library.
Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous said the student artists were chosen from participating schools including Caloundra State High School, Kawana State High School and the Beerwah and District Youth Access Centre.
"The students have created their own artists' books under the guidance of acclaimed artist Adele Outteridge," Cr Aldous said.
A two-metre 'book spire', created as part of the initiative, will become a permanent outdoor sculpture.
"The project is part of the 'book' program offered by Caloundra City Libraries which aims to stimulate, visually excite and challenge readers to question typically assumed definitions of art and text production, and the relationship between reading and art," Cr Aldous said.
The workshops were funded by an RADF grant and introduced papermaking, printmaking and bookbinding, with students exploring the concept of artist books, along with learning more about the industry and being given the opportunity to create their own.
Adele Outteridge is a renowned book artist, printmaker and sculptor whose work has been widely exhibited and appeared in books and magazines both within Australia and overseas.
