Get your diaries: marriage equality will pass next week!

Australian Government Community Equality

It's happening. Marriage equality will be won by Christmas.

I've just returned from Canberra where I watched the Senate pass Dean Smith's marriage equality bill, without any of the nasty conservative amendments.

It was truly incredible. I was moved to tears as the bill passed, because I knew how hard so many of us have worked for that moment, and I know the joy it will bring to so many Australians.

I'd like to echo the gratitude of Senators Janet Rice and Louise Pratt who thanked GetUp members like you from the floor of the Senate. It was an honour to be on the floor of parliament alongside marriage equality legends Rodney Croome and Alex Greenwich representing your hard work.

And GetUp members really have been working on this campaign right up to the very end.

In the past two weeks, GetUp members and Yes volunteers have held meetings with MPs in their electorates to urge them to oppose the awful amendments proposed by conservative Senators Paterson and Fawcett.

In meetings with Coalition MPs Andrew Wallace, Craig Laundy, Kevin Hogan, Trevor Evans and Chris Crewther and Labor MPs Jason Clare, Stephen Jones, Emma McBride and Justine Keay, GetUp members told their representatives that Australians voted Yes to equality, not to new laws to discriminate against LGBTIQ people.

This week, the Senate roundly rejected these very amendments, passing the bill without any substantive change.

On Monday morning, the marriage equality bill will be introduced to the House of Representatives.

Nationals MP Andrew Broad has threatened to put more conservative amendments to the bill 1, and Prime Minister Turnbull has announced he'll personally vote for some of them.2

Despite this, the Dean Smith marriage equality bill is expected to pass the House without amendment next week, making marriage equality law. The numbers to pass the bill have been there for years, and securing a Yes victory in the postal survey means that the Liberal party will finally allow a free vote.

I'll be back in touch next week to let you know the wonderful news, but for now – thank you again for being part of this campaign, for sticking with it when it felt like we were stuck, and for always believing that equality was always in reach.

With love,

Sally, for the GetUp team

PS – I recorded a short video from Parliament on Wednesday afternoon with some more details on what happened in the Senate this week. If you'd like to watch it, click here.
