Despite the rain over the weekend, the annual Christmas in Cooroy event was another huge success with thousands of people partaking in the cornucopia of Christmas activities.

Friday night kicked off with the official turning on of the beautiful Studio Steel Christmas tree.  Grade 6 Cooroy State School student Anjali, who had a stroke earlier in the year had set herself a goal to be able to walk to do the official duty of turning on tree. The crowd were touched by her tenacity and cheered her on as she made the walk to the tree.  The performance by the Four Corners Quartet added a lovely touch to the night and everyone enjoyed a bit of unseasonal snow as well!

The QMP Shop Window Trail was also launched on Friday night also with local businesses throughout town decorating their window.  Visiting the windows is a great way to spend a few hours with the kids and you can also vote for your favourite window by 27 December to win a $100 Cooroy Supa IGA Voucher.

Lane Hoffman and Alex Blake were the winners of the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race which raised funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.  It was a sight to see with about 30 competitors donned in Santa suits racing up the main street of Cooroy.

Spectators lined the street for the ever-popular Bendigo Bank street parade and the floats were of a spectacular standard again.  Over thirty businesses and community groups participated and the “Stories, Books & Authors” theme was a big hit with young and old alike.  Tadpoles Childcare Centre took out the Best Float award with their Peter Pan inspired float but it was a close call with another year of tough competition according to judges Cr Frank Wilkie and Cr Ingrid Jackson.

“This event is such a brilliant show of community spirit, which is why Bendigo Bank are so happy to be major sponsors.  It is just wonderful to see the delight on everyone’s faces and the effort that people put into their floats,” said Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank Manager, Geoff Edwards.

The Shed at Cooroy West Side Traders team took back the title of Best Tuggers in the East versus West Tug of War!  The Cooroy Computers team of West Side Traders gave a valiant effort but had to relinquish the trophy for another year.

The free activities kept people entertained all evening with the free rides sponsored by Cooroy Rag & Madills Motor Group, a foam party sponsored by Cooroy Legal Centre, the SPV accounting sponsored face painting, the Santa visit sponsored by Gelignite Jacks, the fantastic entertainment program sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA, free popcorn from the Leather Doctor, ice-creams from Fiona Winter Realty and of course the spectacular fireworks display sponsored by Cooroy RSL.

“There is a long list of people to thank for this event including the sponsors, the volunteers, the Christmas in Cooroy committee, Rotary Club of Cooroy, Noosa SES, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Police and our MCs Sandy Bolton and Richard Hansen, who all gave up copious amounts of time.  It’s the fantastic community spirit that Cooroy has that makes this event so special,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor.
