A LONG, SUCCESSFUL AND MANY-PRONGED CAREER
Geoff’s CV reads like he has been in training for the Councillor position for years, having started his career in the military. Regional leadership roles at a national finance company and a not-for profit charity organisation came next, followed by many years for a federal government department.
This brought Geoff to the Sunshine Coast, where he quickly fell in love with the lifestyle and put down roots 20 years ago. Four years ago he joined the Sunshine Coast Council, working in the Economic Development Department supporting local businesses but now Geoff wants to take his service to the community to the next level.
During his four years as a Council Officer Geoff has been able to achieve much including:
SUNSHINE COAST UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
When Lend lease won the contract to construct the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Geoff was tasked to ensure that as many local businesses as possible had the chance to work on the project.
He set about building relationships with senior Lend lease staff, organising workshops, information sessions, procurement training, management systems training and up-skilling programs for local businesses. As a result, Sunshine Coast businesses won more than 50% of the tenders for this game-changing project. This in turn boosted the local economy by tens of millions of dollars as well as creating hundreds of jobs and apprenticeships.
TOUGH MUDDER SUNSHINE COAST
Geoff was responsible for taking the initiative to contact the Tough Mudder organisation in the US in an effort to bring the event to the Sunshine Coast.
After successfully negotiating a Sunshine Coast event, Geoff worked with the organisation linking them with local businesses to supply their infrastructure and catering needs.
The 2013 Tough Mudder Sunshine Coast became the biggest ‘Mudder’ in the world - with over 24,000 participants – and delivered a huge economic boost for the Sunshine Coast.
After a 3-night cruise from Brisbane with his wife Leanne, Geoff contacted Carnival Cruises Australia and made a case for the ships to visit Mooloolaba, where guests could partake in shore excursions to visit well known tourism experiences – not available in Brisbane. Within a few weeks, the first visit by the P&O vessel Pacific Pearl was scheduled. These ships are wonderful sight anchored off Mooloolaba but they are also an enormous economic boost for the local economy.
As your Councillor Geoff can achieve even more.
