I have a background in development, land use planning and environmental management. I have worked for Federal, State and Local authorities about Australia, as well as for large consulting companies and smaller specialist firms. I have run my own company since 1995. Through this local specialist firm we build teams of local experts and in-country counterparts to undertake capacity building programs and projects in developing countries targeting development planning, natural resource management and sustainability. While much of the firm's focus is on international development, I offer assistance to local landholders, residents and others on town planning, land management and environmental protection issues (often gratis work among international commitments).
I am a keen sportsperson and was lucky enough to play senior Aussie Rules football in South Australia and Canberra. I was involved in the setup and coaching of AFL in Samoa and have also coached under 16s footy in Landsborough. I am an active member of the Outrigger Canoe Club of Caloundra and will shortly be competing in Sydney for the club. I strongly believe that a range of healthy sporting and recreation activities in a community does much for community development and coherence.
There is a very strong family history with local government, social justice and community development over a few generations, mixed with a strong small business background from farming, retail, accommodation, hotels to café/restaurants. Many of the contemporary issues I have had to address both domestically and in overseas work for countries are now critical issues here on the coast: need for balanced development; better communication with residents; climate change adaptation and mitigation; disaster risk reduction; landscape based planning; certainty in urban development; conflict management; and small business focus to sustainable development.
While the Council has many of the building blocks for the pursuit of sustainable development there seems to be many implementation loggerheads. I am positive I can assist with these constraints. There are complex competing use and development issues for the Coast and I have experience in conflict matters both here in Australia and in my international work. I think there is much to do in ensuring better transparency, integrity and equity in decision-making within Council. I also believe that families have been marginalized from key development decisions in the region – and better systems of engagement and collaboration are needed.
As a past and continuing small business owner I am confident too that I can offer support to small business endeavours.
