Reef Check Australia is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to
protecting Australia's coral communities through scientific research
and community engagement. We train recreational divers in coral health
survey methods so that they are able to participate in volunteer survey
teams on more than 80 research sites on the Queensland coast. By
providing hands-on opportunities to actively participate in coral
monitoring, we are able to engage the Australian community in coral
conservation at a unique level.
Our innovative organization is run by a group of passionate professionals, supported by a network of dedicated volunteers. Established in 2001 by one enthusiastic individual with a strong vision, the charity has inspired over 100 volunteers to train using a scientifically standardised protocol in established monitoring techniques and now collects and distributes valuable data on reef health to marine resource managers and the wider scientific community. This data can provide vital early-warnings of a decline in reef health.
Reef Check Australia works in collaboration with community and industry partners to raise awareness, both locally and further afield through education and participation programs, about the effects of human impacts on the resilience of the reef. Our partnerships with local dive operators allow us to reduce the cost of visiting monitoring locations, enhancing the impacts of our work. We also work closely with natural resource management agencies, researchers, government agencies and other not-for profit organizations to find data applications and inventive partnerships that engage local communities in the conservation of coral habitats.
Reef Check Australia's vision is to see healthy Australian coral habitats, supported by an informed and engaged public. We aim to do this on a number of different levels, not only by responding to the symptoms of coral degradation, but also by tackling the causes.
South East Queensland survey season runs from June to December and includes more than 25 monitoring sites ranging from Noosa to the Gold Coast. Our trained surveyors have the opportunity to learn new skills, contribute coral reef conservation efforts and dive for free! We are always looking to expand our volunteer base and community partnerships, so please feel free to contact us if you are interested in getting involved. The reef needs you!
