28 April 2006 $10,000 art prize for Kenilworth Celebrates Exhibition
Maroochy Shire Council recently endorsed an annual $10,000 acquisitive painting prize for the Kenilworth Celebrates Art Exhibition being held 23-25 September 2006.
Maroochy Mayor Joe Natoli said establishing this unique and prestigious award will invite prominent artists Australia wide to enter their works in the Mayor's Prize Art Exhibition.
"This is the Shire's largest art prize in Maroochy's smallest community and I love that contradiction," Cr Natoli said.
"This acquisitive prize will build national recognition and interest for the arts in Maroochy Shire and will definitely broaden cultural tourism in this region.
"The Kenilworth Celebrates festival provides a significant economic benefit to the area that has become affectionately known as 'the bush behind the beach'," he said.
The award is open to all artists working in Australia in any 2D medium and the winning painting will be added to and enhance the existing Maroochy Shire art collection.
Division One Councillor Greg Rogerson said the Kenilworth Celebrates Art Exhibition has become one of the key art and cultural events in Maroochy Shire.
"This festival recognises the exceptional talent we have not only from the Sunshine Coast, but also Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba and as far north as Sarina near Mackay," Cr Rogerson said.
"From art and music, to street performers and workshops, the three day festival brings a variety of cultural activities, and an increasing number of tourists to the town every year.
"I congratulate the Kenilworth Arts Council and the Kenilworth community for their ongoing commitment and dedication to this key event for our region," Cr Rogerson said. "It's events such as this that make me feel proud to represent this wonderful hinterland area of Maroochy Shire."
The Mayor's Prize is hosted by the Kennilworth Arts Council, established in 1989, and the Kenilworth Celebrates Art Exhibition committee, who will administer the prize.
