The 10X10 Short Play Festival aims to celebrate the shared stories that connect communities. It will invite playwrights and emerging writers from regional communities in Queensland to submit 10 minute original plays.
Groups of enthusiastic play readers in our community will then read the plays aloud as a group, bringing the stories to life perhaps for the first time. Discussion topics and an assessment tool will be provided to offer feedback on each play. A selection process will determine the 10 final plays to be chosen and staged by local community actors and directors. Play readers have the opportunity to take up the role of acting or directing along with local community theatre groups and professional arts workers also invited to the audition process. The plays will be brought to life on the stage by real people acting in and directing the work in front of a live and local audience.
This process will culminate in 10 original plays, all of 10 minutes length representing a 10×10 Short Play Festival celebrating contemporary stories from our region.
“it’s about creating a culture of culture”
The 10×10 Short Play Festival is also about creating a culture of culture in Gympie and regional Australia. People enjoy being personally i10x10proposalnvolved in creative expression whether they are tree-changers, sea-changers or have been in regional communities for generations. 10X10 is keeping it real and showing that the city is not the only context for the arts.
The 10×10 Short Play Festival aims to help build an audience for Gympie’s iconic Heritage Theatre with its beautiful 400 seat, fly tower and proscenium arch, and encourage similar activity in theatres and halls in our communities.
“let’s celebrate the creation of stories”
It aims to celebrate the ‘creation of stories’ of people in our communities, and that of emerging cultural achievements in regional Australia. The call for 10 minute plays throughout the local and the wider community encourages young writers and established writers an opportunity to have their plays performed and, more importantly, seen by an audience. There is no prerequisite theme; the plays need only be local (Australian) and original.
