The highlight of the event is the men's and women's finals, played on Sunday afternoon. The atmosphere is fantastic and a great climax to a competitive and rewarding weekend is finished up with the presentations for individual performance, achievements and team winners, followed by a barbecue meal and a wind down of yet another fantastic Paradise Lacrosse Tournament.
LACROSSE THE STORY OF PARADISE
Lacrosse, an international sport of world wide acclaim. It's humble origins taken back to the Iroquois Indians, when a team consisted of 100 or so players and 'full contact' had no limitations.
These days, the athleticism and skill required to play lacrosse remains the same, the game consists of two 10 man (8 players for women) teams who aim to shoot the ball into the goal during the game, the men still have full contact but with rules and body padding.
The description aerial hockey comes to mind, except on the end of the stick is mesh strung on a frame, with which to catch and throw the hard rubber ball at incredible speeds of approximately 160km/ph.
The Paradise Lacrosse Tournament, also from humble origins, in a town called Caboolture began in 1988. Ray Trevaskis, the Tournament Director since the inaugural year of the Paradise Tournament, decided back then that Queensland needed a name for itself in the Lacrosse stakes, as there had not been much interest in developing a Queensland Lacrosse competition. To create a name for Queensland in the Australian and International Lacrosse world Ray began The Paradise Lacrosse Tournament.
For 3 years players would trek to Caboolture annually from all over Australia, and some times internationally, to duel it out over a four day period, for the victory of The Paradise Lacrosse Tournament.
1991 saw The Paradise Tournament step up to the Gold Coast, Broadbeach Soccer club where it attracted even more players and increased the competitive edge.
1998 to 2001 the Tournament was integrated as part of the Indy 2000, as a support event, this only increased the tournament reputation and encouraged the players and supporters for a return in years to come.
After many fantastic memories of games and long nights at the Gold Coast, Ray, the Tournament Director decided to set his sights on a venue closer to home, for the 18th annual Paradise Lacrosse Tournament, Quad Park, Sunshine Coast.
