Thursday 29 October 2009 Marino joins former champions in star studded PGA line-up
American Steve Marino will join former champions Nick O'Hern, Peter Lonard, Peter Senior and Craig Parry to contest a star-studded 2009 Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola at the Hyatt Regency Coolum from December 10-13.
Marino will make his first appearance on the Australasian and OneAsia Tours when he lines up alongside the former winners of the PGA of Australia's flagship event which is further boosted by the inclusion of last year's runner up Mathew Goggin, Queenslanders Adam Scott, Rod Pampling and John Senden as well as Stuart Appleby, Richard Green, Nathan Green, Peter O'Malley and Australia's newest PGA Tour graduate Cameron Percy.
Playing in his third season on the USPGA TOUR, 29 year old Marino has enjoyed a successful year in 2009, playing in 29 events and racking up 13 Top 25 finishes, earning just over $US2.16 million. His five top ten finishes came at the Sony Open, the Zurich Classic, the Wyndham Championship, the TOUR Championship, and the Crowne Plaza Invitational where he narrowly lost in a three-way playoff. He finished the FedExPlayoffs ranked 15th in the FedEx Cup point standings and is currently ranked 34th on the Money List.
The confirmation of Marino and former champions O'Hern (2006), Lonard (2002, 2004 & 2007) Senior (2003, 1989) and Parry (1992) follows earlier announcements that three time Major Champion Vijay Singh, crowd favourite John Daly, defending champion Geoff Ogilvy and Australia's young guns Michael Sim, Marc Leishman and James Nitties will all be in Coolum for the season closer.
"Once again the Australian PGA Championship has produced a sensational field which is only fitting for a season ending event. We have assembled the strongest possible Australasian contingent which will throw out the challenge to the international players and make for great action for golf fans," said Max Garske, CEO of the PGA of Australia.
"It could all come down to the winner of the PGA Championship to decide the Norman Von Nida Order of Merit Champion and we have a line-up that will ensure an exciting finale to the 2009 season."
The 2009 Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola is the final event on the Australasian Tour and OneAsia Super Series calendars for 2009. It will be played at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on Queensland's Sunshine Coast from December 10-13.
