Nurses warm-up for bed pan races
With International Nurses' Day fast approaching, nurses in the region are warming-up for the fourth annual Golden Bed Pan Bed Race which will be held on Saturday, May 8 at the Sunshine Coast Grammar School in Forest Glen.
Training has commenced as the various participating hospitals, nursing homes, and community care organisations and universities prepare their teams for the big day. The bed race teams will have the opportunity to run, grab, wrap and dodge their way to victory for the highly coveted Golden Bed Pan Trophy.
The races are hosted by Regional Nursing Solutions (RNS) as part of the 2010 RNS Big Wrap for Nurses to say thank you for the invaluable contribution nurses make to the community.
RNS Managing Director, Sue Dunlop believes that everyone has been directly or indirectly touched by the work of our nurses and the Big Wrap provides an opportunity to celebrate nurses and to give these men and women the 'big wrap' they deserve.
"Whilst this is a fun event, we also believe it is a good mechanism to spread our message of thanks a little further every year. As part of the celebrations we will take our Big Wrap Van on the road between Cairns and Brisbane to deliver over 5,000 gifts to nurses as a token of our appreciation," said Sue.
To celebrate the dedication and achievements of nurses who continue to improve the standards of health around the world today, this year's Big Wrap event will take on an 'Around the World' theme.
This is even more relevant with 2010 being officially declared as the International Year of the Nurse by the United Nations and also marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Florence Nightingale, who is celebrated for pioneering the foundations of the nursing profession.
"The bed races have become quite a highlight on the nursing calendar and they are getting increasingly competitive. Teams are preparing for the big event with Nambour General Hospital's Emergency Department hoping to defend their title and Sunshine Coast Private Hospital planning to hand over the wooden spoon trophy," said Sue.
"Our Big Wrap objective is to show those in the nursing profession that they are valued and recognised. By the delivery of a small gift or participation in a fun day of bed racing, we hope to achieve our goal of making every nurse feel appreciated."
