Come and join in or view from the shore, the now famous Christmas Boat Flotilla (originally known as "Carol's Carols" after its creator Carol Symington). As in previous years the idea is to gather with friends and neighbours and welcome the coming Festive Season.
The 2012 Flotilla will be the 15th time that this Christmas Flotilla has been celebrated and with everybody's involvement it can be the BEST SO FAR!! We have a fabulous waterway for our enjoyment and encourage as many as possible to take part.
There are prizes for the best decorated boat, kayak, bathtub or anything that will create fun and festivities, so we suggest that you start planning your decorations immediately. Please involve your children, neighbour's children or grandchildren, as they will 'hit the mark' with their design ideas every time.
As an encouragement to get into the Christmas spirit we will also be awarding prizes for the best lit homes on the canal and dry blocks. Judging for these competitions will take place during the week commencing 17 December.
Remember: the view from houses, parks and bridges (see map) can be a fabulous photo opportunity for anyone not on a boat so take up your places!
Radio Station 101.3 FM will be playing Christmas Carols and music for us from 6 pm to 8 pm - please tune in and enjoy! The Station is also promoting the event as part of its Community service.
To ensure the safety for all participants it would be appreciated if crab pots could be removed and if reflective tape could be affixed to jetties, protruding structures and moored vessels. If you need any assistance please email Warren Burrows.
Skippers please note:
The Parade will start at 6.45pm and will be signalled by 2 long air horn blasts from the Coastguard vessel. The Coastguard vessel will lead and be followed by the first and second winners from last year. Please be patient in forming up as it will take some time for all boats to get underway.
The Parade route is different from previous years. The new route is shown on this map. Skippers please study the new map and keep in single file and to your right according to map directions.
The Coastguard vessel will use their fire pump water spray appropriately lit for extra effect.
VHF Channel 22 will be used for any safety communications. Several boats in the parade will maintain special watch for any problems and communicate through VHF channel 22 if necessary.
Should weather or any other matter necessitate calling off the Parade, once started, the Coastguard vessel will signal 5 short blasts by air horn and repeat as necessary.
Skippers of all craft please ensure that your craft has navigation lights and extra lighting at the stern. It is not easy to see, from well lit boats, the rear of boats with standard illumination. There will be a half moon.
4 knots no wash.
No overtaking unless really necessary.
Do not have any unsafe temporary electric wiring that could cause a problem or at worst an explosion on your craft.
Skippers of boats are responsible for the safety of those on board and may also be responsible for any damage to others. Please do not overload your craft, but fill it up to its legal limit with friends. If you have spare space perhaps share your good luck with others seeking a ride!
Make sure your insurance is up to date - just in case!
