IROQ continues a long and proud history of top-flight rallying in Queensland. With its forerunner Rally Queensland, the event has been staged since 1968, when the Australian Rally Championship was inaugurated.
It’s the longest-running round of the national championship and has been professionally organised throughout this time by the Brisbane Sporting Car Club Ltd (BSCC).
Run originally out of Brisbane, the rally since 1997 has showcased the beautiful Sunshine Coast. The warm winter climate, superb beach and hinterland settings and resort facilities make IROQ a most popular destination on the FIA APRC and ARC calendars.
In more than 40 years, it has seen some extraordinary talents in action, including Possum Bourne, Ross Dunkerton, Ed Ordynski, Neal Bates, Murray Coote, Greg Carr, Cody Crocker, Simon Evans, Colin Bond, Harry Firth and George Fury. Current BSCC member Chris Atkinson used his experience and success in the 2004 Rally Queensland to secure a prized place in the Subaru World Rally Team from 2005. Of course Chris won IROQ in 2012 driving an MRF Skoda.
It is significant that both the Queensland Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland, and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council recognise the economic and community benefits of IROQ through continuing financial support.
