Australian of the Year, Alan Mackay-Sim, will be guest speaker at a local Sunshine Coast fundraising event for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.

This year’s award winner will join other members of the community at the Gala Open Garden event on Sunday 19 March at Carters Ridge.

Emeritus Professor Mackay-Sim has spent his career researching stem cells. Little did he know that he would also need his own stem cell transplant to help fight the blood cancer that was lurking in his body.

“While I knew all about stem cells in my profession, when I became a patient I felt the same shock and anxiety, and experienced the same steep learning curve as anyone else,” Alan said.

The event is the brainchild of local woman Di Palframan supported by a group of work and social friends.  Di said she wanted to do something to help after her husband Warwick was diagnosed in 2014 with Myelodysplasia, a disease that affects normal blood cell production.

“We both spent the previous two years in and out of hospital and rehabilitation after we were involved in a severe motorbike accident. Then Warwick found out he had a blood disease,” Di said.

“Now after lots of treatments he is ready for a bone marrow transplant. As his luck would have it, his siblings are not a match and presently there is not a match for him in Australia. However we have recently been informed an international match has been found”.

The event will feature open garden walks, with high tea, a variety of stalls, raffles as well as a colour/shave booth where people can get involved by shaving or colouring their hair for World’s Greatest Shave. Di plans to dye her hair vivid pink.

Through the World’s Greatest Shave the Leukaemia Foundation hopes to raise $17 million across Australia to give families fighting blood cancer the emotion and practical support they need.
