SOWING THE SEEDS FOR SUSTAINBILITY
As springtime approaches and homegrown produce is at its peak, Noosa Biosphere’s Social Sector Board, Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance and the Sunshine Coast Council’s Smart Arts + program will explore all things ‘green arts’ at the ‘J’ at Noosa Junction from 6pm on the 2nd of August in the 7th Pecha Kucha event called ‘Green Love’.
Successful local events such as the recent Floating Land in Boreen Point, have been leading the charge in exploring the interface between arts and the environment, with the aim of stimulating new perspectives and opportunities in our creative communities.
The significance of community gardens, particularly school gardens is also becoming clearer with studies both in Australia and overseas highlighting not only the importance of learning about food, plants and the environment at an early age but the variety of skills and social connections that can be developed while engaging in ‘earthy’ activities.
Exploring new ways to communicate and foster social networks is one of the key challenges for the Social Board in its efforts to support a socially sustainable community. We are thrilled to be part of this event and look forward to the artistic interpretations that will be presented', said Rod Wallbridge, the Social Boards recently appointed Chairman.
Pecha Kucha (pronounced pe-cha-ka-cha), literally means conversation and this session will be a conversation on the intersect between arts, ecology and community food production.
Samantha Martin (pictured below) is just one of the Sunshine Coast creatives who will participate in the session and she will share her stories through documentaries based on Bush Tukka.
Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance coordinator and lecturer at the Central Queensland University Dr Sue Davis said the event would be showcasing talents and activities from 10 local creatives. Each presentation is capped at 6 minutes assuring the audience a full program that will delight and inspire.
Pecha Kucha began in Japan in 2003 and provides a relaxed forum for artists, designers, entrepreneurs, environmentalists and others to present and showcase their skills and ideas and share their passions.
Dr Davis said the presentations would cover mediums as diverse as sculpture and photography, through to garden design and the art of healthy homegrown food.
“The evening promises another fascinating event and the opportunity to connect with other like minded and interesting creatives,” Dr Davis said.
“We are particularly excited with the opportunity to work with the Biosphere Social Board and showcase local talent as a means of illustrating the diversity of thinking and projects within the Biosphere.”
Dr Davis urged Sunshine Coast residents to attend the event.
“Come along be entertained, amazed and challenged,” she said.
Entry is $10 for non members and $5 for members of the SC Creative Alliance. Healthy snacks will be included and drinks will be available for purchase from 5.30pm for 6pm with an opportunity to network with local artists, entrepreneurs, designers, gardeners and environmentalists.
