Public Announcement - Kite festival transport, tides and road closure information
Festival organisers are urging all motorists to take advantage of the free parking and bus services available during the upcoming IGA Coolum Kite Festival from October 3-4, 2009 due to a number of road closures in and around the Coolum area.
Over 40,000 visitors are expected to converge upon Coolum Beach for the festival, which will see Stumers Creek Road closed from 1:00 pm on Friday, October 2 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, October 4.
The David Low Way will also be closed through Coolum, between Hewitt Street and Springfield Avenue on Saturday, October 3 from 1:00pm to 10:00pm and on Sunday, October 4 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
There will be a number of detours in place through Coolum directing traffic via Hewitt Street and Springfield Avenue.
"I would like to urge all motorists to be patient around road closures and would encourage all visitors to take advantage of the free parking and shuttle buses available for the duration of the festival," said Gem Lewis, President, IGA Coolum Kite Festival.
Buses will run between Beach Road and Stumers Creek with pick up points in three locations including the Coolum Sports Complex, Jack Morgan Park, Tickle Park. There will be free parking available at the Coolum Sports Complex and Jack Morgan Park.
All road closures and detours will be clearly signed for ease and accessibility, traffic within these closure points will be notified to give way to pedestrians at all times.
Low tide is expected at 1:17pm on Saturday and 1:54pm on Sunday, while high tide will be at 7.26pm on Saturday and 7:56pm on Sunday.

Festival line up expected to attract crowds

Expected to attract over 40,000 people to its spectacular beach setting at Stumers Creek on Coolum Beach, visitors will be spoilt for choice as this year's event will boast an extensive program with something on offer for all to enjoy.
A popular highlight each year is the music festival that simmers in the moonlight over Stumers Creek and this year's line up will be nothing short of impressive including a special performance by Afro Dizzi Act featuring Jali Buba from Senegal in West Africa and 'cyclonic sonic' sensation Band of Frequencies headlining the night-time spectacular.
IGA Coolum Kite Festival President, Gem Lewis says that the skies will be alive with a fantastic array of kites during the day and the evening program will provide a diverse range of entertainment from live bands, to fireworks, night-time skydiving, and fire twirling displays.
"The festival is growing to become a premier event in the region and continues to showcase not only some of the best kite flyers from around the world but also many talented artists, performers and entertainers," said Gem.
Choose from a full program of children's activities including tiny tots music and movement, beginners break dance workshops as well as interactive sand sculpting and kite making workshops. Or enjoy all the action on the beach with one of Australia's largest downwind kiting events, the 'Off the Lip' kite surfing challenge.

Festival Flying high
One of Australia's largest kite festivals will see the skies over Coolum Beach on Queensland's Sunshine Coast transform into a kaleidoscope of colour. The 9th annual IGA Coolum Kite Festival, which is expected to attract over 40,000 people to its spectacular beach setting, will be held from October 3-4.
The vibrant event, which has grown in popularity over the years, will attract some of the best national and international kite flyers who will showcase their impressive skills over the two days.
Kites of all shapes and sizes will be on display including some massive character and theme-based kites and spectators will also have the opportunity to participate in a series of windsock, kite and lantern-making workshops.
There will be plenty of action in the water too, with a number of top quality kite surfing demonstrations on all weekend. The 2009 festival will feature 60 top kite surfers battling the waves in one of Australia's biggest downwind events, the 'Off the Lip' kite surfing challenge.
The weekend festival is not just about kites, there will be plenty of fireworks, roving performers, food and market stalls, night-time skydiving and sand sculptures as well as a kids zone with loads of activities for children of all ages.

As always, the Coolum Kite Festival will showcase some of the best kite flyers from around the world. Kites of all shapes and sizes will be on display including some massive character and theme based kites. The 2009 Festival will also showcase Kite Surfers from around Australia competing in the competitive waves of Coolum Beach. Displays from parachute jumps are also a regular inclusion, as is a huge cultural arts component and a popular music festival that simmers in the moonlight over Stumers Creek.
