Welcome, my Lords and Ladies, Merchants and Peasants to a very special Abbey Medieval Festival and Tournament. This year is one of excitement and celebration as we move to our new permanent site (God willing) to hold the 20th Tournament on the 11th and 12th July 2009.
The award-winning festival received the inaugural 2009 Community Event Award by the Moreton Bay Regional Council in January.
The Abbey Museum holds the festival to raise funds to maintain its priceless collections. The Museum would like to acknowledge the support and dedication of the re-enactors and performers that makes the festival possible.
The festival is the largest authentic medieval event in Australia. It spans a thousand years in Europe and the Middle East from the Dark Ages to the High Middle Ages, from AD 600 to 1600.
Our volunteers and staff are working furiously to get the site ready for the 11th and 12th July. The rainy season has delayed progress but we hope that we can welcome you --- our loyal patrons --- to enjoy our new woodland venue.
There will be some major exciting changes this year. The new site is located near St Michael's College and you will be guided where to park. There will be a slightly longer bushland walk of about 250 metres or more (depending where you park) to the Tournament grounds, but please see it as a pilgrim's way to lead you back into the spirit of the Middle Ages. We will have some medieval wagons disguised as golf carts to convey our more infirm patrons.
It has taken all our available funds to get the site ready, despite bad weather and other delays.
Please note that this year we are ticketing the Jousting Spectacular with a small extra cost to make sure as many people as possible can see the event, one of our most popular and thrilling spectacles (See The Joust).
The festival begins on Saturday, 4 July, with our famous Medieval Banquet. Through the week there will be a range of activities, culminating with the weekend Tournament on 11 & 12th July.
There is something for all ages at the Tournament. The breath-taking pageantry of the Joust; the courage and skill of knights in armed combats; a new and spectacular Grand Parade with over 500 re-enactors parading from the castle; a Masque Ball, educational talks and exotic food. Visit the famous Medieval market to indulge your shopping fantasies or the Stag Inn and the Tavern to satisfy your thirst. There is music, dance, arts and crafts and rich photographic opportunities.
Come and enjoy the magic of the 20th Abbey Medieval Tournament on the 11th and 12th July 2009.
