If you drop a china cup, it will crack. If you sow an apple seed, it will grow into an apple tree. Most people would agree with the law of cause and effect; it’s a concept central to modern scientific thought. Interestingly, Buddhists, have been familiar with this law for over 2,500 years. The term is karma, a word that even non-Buddhists happily use on a daily basis, recognising one simple truth: that our own actions, thinking, words and choices have consequences.
It’s important to know, however, that Buddhists do not view karma as punishment or a mysterious force, but instead prefer to look at karma as a way of understanding and reflecting upon the problems and the joys we experience in daily life. Our suffering and our happiness are results we create, effects that we can take responsibility for. This is tremendously empowering knowledge, because we realise we can become wiser and more skilful in our actions. We can take control of our lives and consequently not feel so powerless.
Be guided through the fascinating subject of karma with Buddhist nun Venerable Thubten Pema in a weekend course at beautiful Chenrezig Institute, the Sunshine Coast’s thriving Buddhist Centre nestled in the Eudlo hinterland. Enjoy serene surroundings while soaking up ancient Buddhist wisdom which remains so fresh, relevant and applicable to modern life.
The weekend will include teachings, meditation sessions and time for discussion. Students will learn effective tools for purifying mistaken actions and explore methods for becoming more skilled in understanding and dealing with what life seems to throw at us.
Chenrezig is the perfect place for quiet reflection. You don’t need to be a Buddhist to come along. Everyone is welcome to attend.
