19 July 2005  All hands on deck for National Tree Day

Settlers' Rotary Park at Glass House will become much greener this month when 2000 native plants are added as part of National Tree Day on July 31.

Caloundra City Mayor, Don Aldous, said each year Council contributes both plants and the expertise of Council staff in support of Planet Ark's National Tree Day.

"Each year Council also helps local schools with habitat restoration projects or shade tree plantings on school grounds," Cr Aldous said.

"As our population continues to grow it is important that we do everything we can to maintain our green spaces and natural habitats."

Division two Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz, welcomed the huge planting, which will provide wildlife habitat and a buffer along the creek to protect water quality. Indications are that this will be a well-supported community event.

"The local community have really supported the project, with The Rotary Club Of The Glass House Mountains providing a free sausage sizzle, Glass House Mountains Advancement Network donating the majority of the plants and a number of local businesses helping to prepare for the day," Cr Grosskreutz said.

A host of activities have been planned between 8am and 11am, with a free tree giveaway for Division two residents (please bring rates notice) and a guest appearance from Hugo the Healthy Waterways Turtle.

Participants should bring along a hat and gloves. Four tree planting sites have been organised across Caloundra City:

- Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Annex - 24 Mary Cairncross Ave, Maleny, 9am -  noon
- Hardie Buzzacott Wildflower Reserve - Roderick Street, Moffat Beach, 9am - noon
- Crummunda Park and Currimundi Lake, Coongarra Esplanade, Wurtulla, 9am - noon
- Settlers' Rotary Park, Bruce Parade, Glass House Mountains, 8 - 11am

The Schools Tree Day will take place on Friday July 29.
