This month is "Collections" month across the Sunshine Coast with
council's regional galleries and arts centres celebrating with a diverse
program of public events including a free arts seminar titled Why
Presented by Helen Cole and Brian Tucker the seminar will be held at 10.30am on Tuesday 26 October at the gallery and will present insightful talks by Helen Cole and Brian Tucker about their collecting experiences and processes from both a public and private perspective.
As Senior Librarian at the State Library of Queensland in the Australian Library of Art, Helen will discuss her involvement over a period of 18 years in building the SLQ collection into one of the richest art research resources in Australia.
Brian Tucker is an accountant who works almost exclusively in the arts. His clients range from visual and performing artists, writers and film-makers to arts organisations and Aboriginal art centres.
Brian has been collecting art for more than 20 years. He now has more than 850 works in his collection, 40 percent of which are by indigenous artists and include traditional dot paintings from the Central and Western Deserts, ochres from the Kimberley, bark paintings and weavings from Arnhem Land and sculptures from the Tiwi Islands.
The event aims to trigger discussion and build awareness of the diversity and value of collections ahead of the development of a Collections Policy for the Sunshine Coast Council. The new policy will provide an overarching framework to guide the development and management of council's collections, ensuring they are interesting, relevant and accessible.
Attendees to the art seminar will also have the opportunity to view the travelling exhibition, Twelve Degrees of Latitude: Regional Gallery and University Art Collections in Queensland, currently on show at the gallery
Bookings to the free seminar are essential. To make a booking or for more information, contact Cathy Money, Education and Public Programs on 07 5420 8299.
