4 people, 3 relationships, you do the math
theatre s is calling an audition on March 25 from 10am to 1pm, for a co-operative production of the Jane Bodie play Fourplay, to be directed by Louise Birgan. Required are 2 male and 2 female actors to portray characters from mid-20s to mid-40s.
This play is essentially about 3 love relationships between 4 characters. You do the math! Who ends up with whom?
The author suggested her plays are closer to song and poetry than novels. There's more rhythm and word play. Jane Bodie does not write feel-good romps. Her plays tend to be unsettling and emotionally complex, exploring failed intimacy and sexual tension (in Fourplay a character falls in love with her stalker), but pitch-black humour is always bubbling beneath the surface.
Jane enjoyed a writing stint on The Secret Life of Us, and was also involved with the early development of Crashburn, a show for which she is full of admiration. "I think it's brave and it's real and that might make people turn it off, because it isn't navel-gazing and people talking crap, it's actually about a relationship disintegrating."
Such breezy sincerity seems in stark contrast with Bodie's plays and their unflinching portrayal of brittle relationships and frustrated desire. "It is funny, because I think I am thought of as a bit of a cynic about relationships," she says. "But I realised the other day, I'm actually a hopeless romantic."
Bodie's plays are structurally adventurous (or, in her own words, "quite mad"), from the jumbled chronology of Speaking in Thongs to the succession of unconnected monologues that make up Still.
Rehearsals will be during July and August for 6 performances in September at Buderim War Memorial Hall and Theatre J, Noosa Junction.
Auitionees will be expected to learn a very short scene from the play.
