Sunshine Coast Council today announced former Queenslander of the
Year recipient, Dimity Dornan as Ambassador for this year's Australia
Day Awards Ceremony to be held at 'The J' in Noosa Junction, Noosa Heads
on Tuesday 25 January 2011.
Ms Dornan, a Brisbane-based Speech Pathologist, founded the Hear and Say Centre in Queensland two decades ago, with six centres now located throughout the state, providing much needed assistance to more than 200 hearing impaired children.
She is currently the Managing Director for the Hear and Say Centre in Brisbane, which is a not-for-profit organisation helping deaf children to listen and speak just like children with normal hearing abilities.
Mayor Bob Abbot said council was pleased and privileged to have Dimity Dornan on board as Ambassador for this year's Australia Day Awards Ceremony.
"Dimity has been recognised for her work with hearing impaired children along with her efforts to eliminate the myth that deaf children cannot hear and speak well enough to be understood," the Mayor said.
"We are looking forward to her participation in our Australia Day Awards celebration 2011, and hearing of her inspirational journey."
In addition to her role with the Hear and Say Centre Ms Dornan teaches professionals globally, has been awarded a Churchill Fellowship (1992) and is a member of the Order of Australia (1998) along with a Fellow of Speech Pathology Australia (1999). She has also received the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Award of Distinction for Services to Medicine (1999) and Australian Social Entrepreneur of the Year (2005) for her outstanding achievements.
The Australia Day Ambassador Program sends high achieving Australians to over 300 community celebrations nationwide every Australia Day. Ambassadors may be scientists, sports people, actors, business people or general community workers who provide inspiration, motivation and pride to Australia Day events and activities.
The Australia Day Ambassador Program is coordinated by Australia Day Councils and Committees in each state and territory and has been sponsored by Woolworths for the past ten years.
Mayor Abbot said the Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day Awards celebrate the contribution of individuals, community organisations and businesses in the region.
"These prestigious awards are designed to pay tribute to those who make extraordinary contributions to society or who are outstanding achievers in the community," the Mayor said.
The event will run from 4.30 to 5.45pm, with Ms Dornan scheduled to speak at 4.55pm. As well as the presentation of awards by Mayor Bob Abbot, there will be performances from local musicians.
