Tuesday 25 October 2005 Australian environment celebrated at Caloundra Regional Art Gallery
A special multi-arts event will launch an exciting month of exhibitions that celebrate the beauty and fragility of the Australian landscape and challenge us to engage in environmental concerns at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery in November.
Exhibitions, Earth Song and Great! Walks will be interpreted through experimental dance, music and photography in a special launch from 7pm on Friday November 18 in Felicity Park outside the Gallery.
Over the past two months, The Caloundra Regional Art Gallery in collaboration with the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery has been managing an artist in residency and group workshop program as part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great! Walk Initiative.
Internationally renowned local artist Elizabeth Woods has been leading a group of professional artists preparing a body of work for the exhibition which showcases the value and sensitivity of our diverse regional environment. The Blackall Range forms the basis of their work, with a new 54km walking trail through national park, forest reserve and conservation park being planned for the area.
The exhibition is part of the Great Walks of Queensland, a $10 million Queensland Government initiative creating a series of world-class walking tracks through some of the state's most beautiful natural areas. These include the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Gold Coast Hinterland, Fraser Island, Whitsundays, Mackay Highlands and the Wet Tropics.
The Great Walks Art and Environment program is a state-wide public art initiative that aims to promote art and the environment and encourage local communities to explore, experience and enjoy the Great Walks through art.
Also showing is Earth Song by Christine Maudy. With her painterly eye, a commitment to travelling and her background as a trained pilot, Christine provides an overarching vision of the world through the universal language of colour and emotion. …./2
Supported by Greenpeace, the exhibition calls viewers to engage with ecological concerns.
Earth Song and Great Walks open on 9 November until 11 December. The official opening will get underway at 7pm on Friday 18 November in Felicity Park.
