The War Within Don Tate
Vietnam veteran Don Tate has been fighting his whole life. From a tough childhood in Brisbane to the horrors of Vietnam and a slow implosion in the decades after, Don traces his life story with brutal honesty in the acclaimed memoir The War Within.
Well known for his fight to validate the existence of a platoon he claims was 'edited out' of the histories of Vietnam for almost 40 years, Don will be making a special appearance at Noosa Library on Wednesday 11 November at 6.30pm.
He will also host a special screening of historic film he took in Vietnam as a young infantryman in 1969, which shows the 4th and 9th battalions in the field, patrols in the thick jungle of Long Khanh and an air strike by US Phantoms.
Don will speak about The War Within and how it describes a "tsunami of astonishing sequences" from sexual and physical abuse, teenage delinquency, violence, the clamour of jungle warfare and gut-wrenching descriptions of the aftermath, war atrocities, the corruptions of history, lust and love, and the simple joys and tragedies of life.
Described by reviewers as "the voice of a generation, stilled for forty years", The War Within has been labelled one of the most extraordinary memoirs ever published in Australia.
Don will appear at Noosa Library on Wednesday 11 November at 6.30pm. The cost is $6 and includes wine and supper. Bookings are essential. Phone Noosa Library on 5442 4411 to book your spot.
