Born and raised in Amsterdam, then emigrating with her family to Australia in 1964, Elisabeth now lives in idyllic countryside at Black Mountain just west of Cooroy. With the help of cows and goats for milk and meat, pigs, chooks, bees, worm farms, veggie gardens and fruit trees, she is largely self sufficient and has acquired many skills on the journey.
Most of the food needs are met from the farm supplemented with sourdough bread made from freshly milled organic wheat, a slab of cheese, salad from the garden washed down with a glass of fruit wine – life doesn't get better than this! Accordingly daily eating is satisfying, tasty and incredibly healthy not to mention very cost effective. Home grown and produced food has a different energy and taste - a contrasting experience to what is available in supermarkets.
Her breakfast presentation will showcase fermented foods and the value of these in our daily diets. There will be samples to try with lots of information on making these traditional foods.
Ten years ago Elisabeth felt it was imperative to pass on her extensive knowledge of food self reliance so that others could benefit and also revive these forgotten skills. She became a Permaculture teacher, where she now shares her experience and passion by helping others to grow and produce their own food.
One day workshops are held at various locations around S.E. Queensland. Participants learn to make their own cheese, sourdough, wine, miso, tempeh and a variety of other fermented foods. The workshops also teach the principles of growing tropical vegetables and basic organic gardening techniques.
